Apply for a grant

As a registered charity, we provide grants and funding to build engagement with the Wikimedia movement, so we can increase our editor base and tell more of Aotearoa New Zealand's stories.

What we fund

We're open to all kinds of applications and ideas. Please feel free to contact us at info@wikimedia.nz with any questions. We're happy to provide advice and feedback to make sure your application has the best chance of success.

Take a look at the examples below, or try us out with something new.

Please keep in mind that we're unlikely to directly fund compensation for content creation or improvement on Wikimedia platforms. Applications should focus on outreach and engagement that builds the community.

Conference attendance

Want to promote the Wikiverse at a conference and get more people editing?  Is there a relevant conference you’d like to attend to improve your Wikimedia contributions? We can provide support for travel, accommodation, and registration costs.

Previous recipients have presented at Wikipedia conferences as well as other professional and topical conferences.

Hosting events

Planning an event such as an edit-a-thon, a training session, or a photography field trip?  We can provide support for venue hire and catering costs, as well as travel funding for participants coming from out of town.

We've funded edit-a-thons about New Zealand topics, including artists, women in architecture, and regional focuses like Mohua/Golden Bay.

Wikipedian in Residence

A Wikipedian in Residence works directly in an organisation such as a heritage or scientific institution to improve topical coverage on Wikipedia, build capability, and improve public engagement.

Both individuals and institutions can apply for this funding, but we recommend individuals have developed a project plan with an institution first.  This funding will usually act as full or partial (to be supplemented by the institution) salary.

We've funded Wikipedian in Residence projects at several institutions, including Auckland Museum and Te Papa.

Wikipedian at Large

The Wikipedian at Large is a unique role that does a series of short projects around the country.  We fund one person in this role at a time, and call for applications each year.
