Join the movement to celebrate women’s stories!
Mark your calendars for an inspiring weekend of learning, collaboration, and connection at the Women in Red Wikipedia Edit-a-thon! This exciting global initiative is coming to Whanganui as part of La Fiesta and will take place on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 February 2025 from 10am to 4pm at Te Rangi (4 Allison Street, Durie Hill, Whanganui). Whether you’re a first-time editor or a seasoned Wikipedian, this is your chance to create and improve Wikipedia articles about remarkable women and their incredible contributions.
You can come with a woman or story in mind; or resources about Whanganui women whose stories have yet to be told in Wikipedia will be provided. Hosted in a fun, welcoming environment, the Women in Red Wikipedia Edit-a-thon is all about addressing the gender bias in Wikipedia content by focusing on women’s biographies and works. All the guidance, and delicious treats you’ll need to keep you energised — including morning tea and lunch, are included. Just bring your laptop and a passion for sharing the stories of kick-arse women with the world. And the best part? You’ll get to meet other like-minded women dedicated to amplifying women’s voices online.
“I was pretty intimidated editing Wikipedia at first,” says organiser Elise Goodge, “learning how by attending edit-a-thons really built my confidence and I now have lots of new friends who are so inspiring, it is easier than you think and fun once you know how.”
Generously funded by Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand (WANZ), this event underscores their commitment to growing the community of contributors to Wikipedia in Aotearoa New Zealand. Elise continues, “knowing you can be part of changing the narrative by telling women’s stories and giving them the recognition they deserve is so empowering!” The event is free, but spaces are limited—so secure your spot today! Simply email Elise at leeziebee@hotmail.com to register.
