2 October 2024The English language Wikipedia hosts almost 60,000 articles on subjects, people and places related to Aotearoa New Zealand. Many of these articles are high quality, well-referenced, objective articles with great illustrations and reference lists. However, there are articles that are highly important to Aotearoa New Zealand and receive many page-views each month, but need improvement. In this column, we’ll highlight and discuss an “article needing attention” each month, identify issues with it and seek help from editors to fill the gaps.
Aotearoa New Zealand Articles Needing Attention
This month, we’re looking at the article on our national bird, the kiwi: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiwi_(bird)
The article has some great images of the kiwi and good descriptive content. It has had 680,000 page-views from people all over the world in the last 12 months. There are some areas for improvement though, namely:
- Add latest available estimate of total population across the five species
- Add content about territorial behaviour, use of burrows, and the multiple burrows that they may have in their territory.
- Add content about the release of North Island brown kiwi into the west of Wellington, and the earlier release into Rimutaka Forest Park (both are mentioned briefly in the North Island brown kiwi article, but seem sufficiently notable to be added here, with updates and expansion – such as how far they have travelled from the release site)
- A sound recording of kiwi calls would be an amazing addition!
- In the popular culture section, add brief mention of the Laser Kiwi flag, with link to that article
