The more and better references, the more reliable and robust the whole thing becomes.
This month Te Papa [and Turnbull Library] are joining the 1Lib1Ref campaign to make Wikipedia a more reliable and robust source, and Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand can support your organisation joining in too.
1Lib1Ref runs twice a year, asking the world’s librarians and other knowledge-holders to add just one reference to Wikipedia.
The 7th most visited site on the web, Wikipedia is where most people start their research. Good references make the information they find more reliable and trustworthy, and a better springboard to further investigation.
To be notable enough for inclusion, Wikipedia articles need high-quality references. 1Lib1Ref is a chance to fill gaps in global knowledge about Aotearoa and the Pacific, as well as repair gender and racial bias by citing marginalised authors.
Because it’s quick and satisfying, a lot of editors have started working on Wikipedia by adding references. It teaches you the basics without the pressure of writing a whole article, so holding a 1Lib1Ref session is a great opportunity to build your skills.
Who’s doing it
Te Papa’s 1Lib1Ref session will bring together their library team and other staff, plus Wikimedian Laureate Siobhan Leachman, in a day-long session on May 29.
Turnbull Library’s session will…TBD
Get a hand
Check out the main 1Lib1Ref site for information about how to participate, whether you’re one person, a group, or a whole organisation. It includes guidance on how to find articles in need of references, adding citations, and organising events.
Wikimedia Australia are running online drop in sessions where you can ask questions and get advice.
Local Wikipedians can also help out by showing you how to get started or joining your event. If you don’t know who’s editing in your area, get in touch with Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand and they’ll track someone down for you. If you’re ready to hold an event but need to hire a space or get some kai, WANZ can also provide funding!
